Poland’s fight against irregular migration: will border checks work?
As Europe marks 40 years since the creation of the Schengen Area, some member states are reintroducing internal border controls. Starting July 7, Poland has temporarily reinstated border checks with Germany and Lithuania. Though officially presented as an effort to tackle illegal migration, experts are sceptical that such measures will produce lasting results.
Poland introduced temporary border controls on its borders with Germany and Lithuania a week ago. In the first week, Polish border guards checked around 67,000 people and 28,500 vehicles at the German border - 24 of whom were refused entry.
Germany and Poland control their border again, tens of thousands of travellers are affected. The Polish border guard delivers an initial balance after a week: two dozen people were not allowed to enter.

For a week, Poland has been randomly controlling its borders with Germany and Lithuania to prevent illegal migration. During this period, border guards deny dozens of people entry to the country. In addition, eight smugglers are arrested.
On the German side, border police are returning illegal migrants to Poland, recently 11 thousand of them, and are also returning to Poland people whose asylum applications have been rejected.
