Controversial Kate McCann interrogation drama confirmed by Channel 5
Channel 5 is producing the 90-minute factual drama 'Suspect: Kate McCann', starring Laura Bayston, written by Philip Ralph, and directed by Paula Wittig, to air later this year.
Three months after Madeleine McCann's May 2007 disappearance, Kate McCann was summoned for questioning by Portuguese police, and the case has remained a fixture in the British press for nearly 20 years.
Portuguese detectives told Kate McCann that they would consider her an 'arguida' , said they no longer believed her account, and warned of murder charges without a confession.
That 48-hour interrogation threatened to halt the search for Madeleine and left the McCanns battling for their freedom, while flawed evidence leaked to the British press reshaped global coverage and Christian Brückner was recently released from prison.
The film is the inaugural instalment in a limited-run series that will surprise viewers by shedding light on lesser-known moments using first-hand accounts, police records, archive transcripts and reconstructed memories.
