KERALA, INDIA, JUN 29 – Ravada Chandrasekhar was appointed Kerala State Police Chief despite controversy over the 1994 Koothuparamba firing that killed five CPI(M) workers, officials said.
- Ravada A. Chandrasekhar has been appointed as the new State Police Chief of Kerala, effective June 30, 2025, as noted by the Kerala Cabinet.
- Chandrasekhar, a 1991-batch IPS officer, has previously been involved in the 1994 Koothuparamba firing incident that killed five CPI workers, leading to political controversy over his appointment.
- The CPI state secretary, M V Govindan, stated the appointment was based on recommendations from the Union Government and not influenced by any prior clean chit from the party.
- Despite past controversies, the CPI has maintained that past issues should not hinder the selection of a new police chief.
