The Comac C949 is designed to fly at 1.6 times the speed of sound.

“China is joining the race in which America has led so far,” writes Rzeczpospolita. China's Comac is working on the C949 supersonic jet, which is expected to reach speeds of more than 2,000 kilometers per hour, while offering 50 percent more range than the legendary Concorde and 95 percent less noise.

China plans to build a supersonic airliner that can reach Mach 1.6, designed to fly further than the Concorde.

The supersonic plane could connect Shanghai and Los Angeles non-stop in just 5 hours.
