- On Monday, Colorado lawmakers advanced House Bill 1144 and Senate Bill 43, moving closer to banning 3-D printed guns and regulating barrel sales.
- Democrats, using near 2-to-1 majorities, backed measures to crack down on so-called ghost guns following prior bans and 89 seizures reported by the Colorado Bureau of Investigations last month.
- HB 1144 would bar individuals from manufacturing 3-D printed weapons and manuals, exempt licensed gun manufacturers and accredited gunsmithing programs, and impose penalties: misdemeanor then felony for repeat violations.
- Each bill will now move to the opposite chamber and is likely to clear further votes before heading to Gov. Jared Polis; the votes kicked off a day of gun-related hearings at the Capitol.
- The barrel bill requires in-person sales by federally licensed firearm dealers and five-year records, while SB 26-043 bars possession of barrels to sell, fitting a broader push to curb so-called ghost guns.
