Collapse at retired South Korean power plant leaves at least 3 dead, 2 others presumed dead

  • Around 2pm on November 6, 2025, a 60-meter boiler tower collapsed at Korea East-West Power Co.'s Ulsan Power headquarters, killing at least one person and trapping six others, officials said.
  • Officials said the boiler tower — one of three at the site — had been weakened while workers dismantled parts of the decommissioned heating facility for demolition preparations.
  • More than 340 rescue workers and around 90 vehicles and equipment were deployed, while firefighters cut through 30 meters of steel using rescue dogs, thermal cameras and endoscopes.
  • Amid safety concerns, authorities evacuated residents and halted searches Friday morning due to unstable rubble, while South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Prime Minister Kim Min-seok ordered full mobilisation for rescue efforts.
  • Shortly after the Thursday collapse, two people were pulled to safety and others remained trapped; a 44-year-old deceased worker was pronounced dead around 5 a.m., and crews located another believed dead.
