NBC Developing New ‘Coach’ Series With Ty Burrell Of ‘Modern Family’
Ty Burrell is eyed to star as the reboot shifts the sitcom from football to college basketball.
NBC is developing a single-camera reboot of the 1990s sitcom Coach, with Modern Family star Ty Burrell eyed to star and executive produce alongside writers Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman.
Created by Barry Kemp, the original Coach aired on ABC for nine seasons, starring Craig T. Nelson as Hayden Fox, head coach of the Minnesota State University Screaming Eagles.
This new iteration shifts from multi-camera to single-camera format, replacing football with college basketball as the story follows a legendary coach returning to Minnesota to rebuild his alma mater's program.
Marking his first on-screen role since Modern Family ended in 2020, Burrell brings sports comedy experience from his recent collaboration with the Libmans on the Peacock series Mr. Throwback.
NBC previously attempted a 13-episode Coach revival in 2015, but scrapped the project after filming one pilot episode; the current reboot remains in development with no confirmed series order or premiere date.
