Glee: Ryan Murphy-Written Revival Gets Disney+ & Hulu Series Order
The new series comes as creators finalize scripts and the original show still draws about 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
On Wednesday, Disney+ and Hulu granted a series order to 'Glee' from 20th Television, 17 years after the original series first launched on Fox, though no cast or producers were announced in the press release.
Co-Creator Ryan Murphy recently confirmed he finished a reboot script with collaborators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, having regularly discussed the potential return over recent months as he promoted other work.
Throughout its six-season run on Fox between 2009 and 2015, the musical dramedy became a cultural phenomenon; its music continues to draw interest, averaging 4.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
While no casting is official, Murphy has been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members, but actor Chris Colfer pointed out that rebooting would be complicated following Naya Rivera's death.
Known for tackling difficult topics like sexuality, race, and disability, the original series was also touched by tragedy, including the deaths of Cory Monteith, Mark Salling, and Naya Rivera.
