CM Stalin Urges PM Modi to Tackle US Tariff Crisis
- On Thursday , Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, flagging a deep sense of urgency over the escalating export crisis caused by U.S. tariffs.
- With new orders drying up, Tiruppur exporters reported Rs 15,000 crore of confirmed orders wiped out and international buyers are diverting orders to Vietnam, Bangladesh and Cambodia.
- The tariffs have translated into a combined daily loss of Rs 60 crore for exporters across Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Erode and Karur districts, with Tamil Nadu accounting for 28% of textile exports and providing employment to over 10 lakh workers.
- Lakhs of workers face immediate risk as lakhs of jobs hang in the balance with layoffs and wage deferrals already occurring, and footwear clusters in Vellore, Ranipet and Tirupatthur show a similar dismal scenario.
- Mr. Stalin urged a bilateral agreement at the earliest, imploring Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prioritise resolving the tariff issue as a humanitarian challenge that threatens exporters’ fortunes and India’s manufacturing hub status.
