Thailand and Cambodia Exchange Artillery Fire and Airstrikes in Decade's Most Severe Border Clash
THAILAND, JUL 25 – The clashes follow landmine injuries to Thai soldiers and involve airstrikes, artillery, and rocket fire, killing at least nine Thai civilians and injuring 14, officials said.
- On Wednesday, Thailand expelled Cambodia’s ambassador and recalled its envoy after a land mine explosion near the border wounded five soldiers, one losing a leg, government said.
- Since May 28, tensions have been rising after a border clash near the Preah Vihear temple killed one Cambodian soldier.
- On July 23, 2025, Cambodian forces launched artillery attacks on civilian targets in Thai territory, and Thailand responded with aerial strikes on military camps.
- Following diplomatic actions, Thailand closed its border crossings with Cambodia, and the government urged Thai nationals in Cambodia to leave and avoid non-essential travel.
- Neighbouring countries called for de-escalation, and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he would speak with his counterparts by day’s end.
