Police Release Ages of Children Who Died when Boat Capsized on Geneva Lake
Strong winds and waves overwhelmed a 10-person boat, and six adults and one child were rescued before three children were found dead, police said.
A boat carrying 10 people capsized on Geneva Lake in Wisconsin on Friday, resulting in the deaths of three children—ages 6, 7, and 10—after the vessel was struck by large waves.
The National Weather Service reported wind speeds reached an estimated 90 to 100 mph, bringing "severe downburst winds that downed hundreds of trees and damaged several buildings," rapidly creating hazardous boating conditions.
Authorities confirmed the 47-year-old operator had extensive boating experience and all four children wore life jackets "of proper size and fit." Divers recovered the three missing children from 32 feet of water after rescuing seven other passengers.
Residents in the Lake Geneva area continue cleanup efforts amid widespread power outages in Walworth County, while the community held a moment of silence on Saturday during Fourth of July events to honor the victims.
Apartment owner Bob Nabasny noted the city purchased a patrol boat this past year to respond to emergencies, yet acknowledged, "in this case, it was just couldn't get to the kids.
