South Korea summons Cambodian ambassador over job scams
Kidnappings of South Koreans linked to fraudulent job offers rose to 330 cases by August 2025, with abuses including forced labor and torture at scam centers, officials said.

- Many victims were lured by fraudulent job offers promising high pay before being detained, while reported kidnappings rose to 220 last year and 330 by August 2025, lawmaker Na Kyung-won said.
- A recent victim was a Korean college student, in his 20s, who left in mid-July and was found dead on Aug. 8 after a blackmailer demanded 50 million won.
- Cho Hyun, Foreign Minister, urged Phnom Penh government to swiftly implement measures and cooperate on a Korean Desk; Khuon Phon Rattanak, Cambodian Ambassador, said Cambodia will report Seoul's concerns.
- Amnesty International reported abuses at at least 53 scam compounds, and South Korea is consulting with Cambodian authorities on an autopsy planned later this month.
