Chinese airlines order 95 Airbus jets with list price of $17.8 billion to expand fleets

  • Air China and its unit Shenzhen Airlines agreed to buy 55 Airbus aircraft for a total list price of $12.4 billion, expanding capacity and modernizing their fleets with fuel-efficient jets.
  • The order includes 15 A350-900 wide-body jets for Air China and 40 A320neo-family narrow-body aircraft for Shenzhen Airlines, expected to boost total capacity by about 7.1% and 4.3% respectively.
  • Air China on Tuesday flagged a net loss of up to 2.6 billion yuan for the first half of the year, saying elevated fuel prices had "drastically squeezed" its profit margins.
  • Other Chinese carriers are also placing large orders with Airbus; China Eastern Airlines recently planned to buy 25 A330neo jets and 101 A320neo aircraft for about $9.35 billion and $15.8 billion respectively.
  • Both airlines will fund the purchases through a mix of their own funds, commercial bank loans, and other financing arrangements, while Air China noted actual transaction prices will be lower due to Airbus discounts.
