China’s Shenzhou 21 docks with space station, sets the country’s own speed record
Wu Fei, at 32, is China's youngest astronaut on a six-month Tiangong mission with three crew members and four mice for in-orbit reproduction experiments, the 10th crewed flight.
- On Friday, Shenzhou-21 will blast off from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center at 11:44 p.m., carrying commander Zhang Lu, payload specialist Zhang Hongzhang, and 32-year-old flight engineer Wu Fei.
- Amid Beijing's push to advance its space ambitions, Tiangong space station, built using launches in 2021–2022, supports China's lunar landing goal before 2030, according to CMSA.
- Carrying four black mice, the mission includes China's first in-orbit rodent experiments; the mice were selected from 300 candidates after more than 60 days of training and will stay five to seven days before returning on Shenzhou-20.
- In the coming days the current Shenzhou-20 crew will hand over control before returning on Nov. 3, while Shenzhou-21 will remain aboard Tiangong for roughly six months.
- Alongside hardware tests, China is expanding international cooperation by training two Pakistani nationals for future missions, with one set to undertake a short-term spaceflight, CMSA said.
