China’s TikTok rival flooded with porn and violent video in cyberattack
The cyberattack used 17,000 bot accounts to flood Kuaishou with explicit videos, disrupting live streams and causing shares to drop 6%, according to a Chinese cybersecurity firm.
- On Dec 22, Kuaishou Technology's platform was breached around 10pm, flooding recommended feeds and live rooms with explicit content for about 90 minutes, and the company reported the incident to police and regulators while activating emergency response measures.
- Kuaishou blamed the attack on black and grey industries, while China Daily and QAX reported it was AI-powered and used 17,000 bot accounts to overwhelm defenses.
- Some live rooms saw viewership surge past 50,000, and by 11.30pm Kuaishou Technology began deleting videos and closed live channels, resuming service by 2am on Tuesday.
