China's Geely launches new hybrid system to challenge Japanese dominance

Geely said the system uses AI to optimize energy management and will enter mass production on popular models, including the Emgrand and Boyue L.

  • On Monday, Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. launched its i-HEV Intelligent Hybrid system in Hainan, China, reporting fuel consumption of 2.22 liters per 100 kilometers during highway tests of an upcoming Emgrand sedan.
  • Geely aims to challenge Toyota Motor Corp., which has dominated the global hybrid market since 1997; Geely Group spokesman Victor Yang said Saturday the technology "will comprehensively surpass the hybrid technology from the Japanese."
  • The i-HEV technology combines driving functions, the cockpit, and the chassis into a "single centralized brain," using AI to optimize energy management and deliver an "EV-like" driving experience without charging requirements.
  • Yale Zhang, managing director at Automotive Foresight in Shanghai, called the launch a "key turning point for the industry," stating it poses a "full-scale challenge to the dominance of Japanese full-hybrid vehicles."
  • Mass production begins immediately, with rollout this year across the Preface, Monjaro, Starray, and Emgrand models as Geely competes with Toyota, which sold 4.4 million hybrids last year.
