China, Russia navies to hold drills off China coast
The annual drills will include reconnaissance, air and missile defence, and surface-strike exercises, the Defence Ministry said.
On Monday, China and Russia will begin Joint Sea-2026 naval exercises in waters and airspace off Qingdao, followed by maritime patrols in the Pacific Ocean, Beijing's Defence Ministry announced on Sunday.
Since 2012, Beijing and Moscow have held these annual Joint Sea exercises, a partnership strengthened by shared opposition to a global order dominated by Washington.
Russian Pacific Fleet vessels arrived in Qingdao, while China's Northern Theatre Command deployed two destroyers, a frigate, a submarine, and support ships for reconnaissance, air and missile defence, and surface-strike exercises.
Roughly two months after Russian President Vladimir Putin visited China, he described bilateral relations as reaching an "unprecedentedly high level," while Chinese President Xi Jinping hailed the partnership as "unyielding."
Western governments view this military partnership with suspicion as Russia's war on Ukraine continues; although Beijing insists it is neutral, many Western allies believe it has provided support to Moscow's war effort.
According to the Chinese authorities, the aim of these exercises is to strengthen the ability of both armies to face security challenges, in addition to contributing to the maintenance of peace and stability in the region
