China Is Now Viewed More Favorably Than U.S. in Much of World, Pew Finds
The survey found record-high favorability for China in many countries, while confidence in Xi Jinping also topped Donald Trump’s in median results.
- On Wednesday, the Pew Research Center released a survey showing China is now viewed more favorably than the United States in 25 of the 36 countries surveyed, marking the first time in roughly 20 years this shift has occurred.
- Tensions between the Trump administration and U.S. allies drove this reversal, as respondents grew concerned that Washington interferes in other countries' affairs more than China does. A median of 75% felt the U.S. interfered greatly, versus 45% for China.
- Pew's median favorable opinion data from 20 countries showed China at 46% versus the U.S. at 36%, a 10-point gap. The survey of more than 42,000 respondents across 35 countries plus the West Bank and East Jerusalem was conducted February through May.
- Confidence in both Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping remains generally low, though Xi outpolls Trump with 31% median confidence versus Trump's 21% regarding world affairs. The U.S. still leads on personal freedoms, but the gap is narrowing.
- Scholar Chong Ja Ian of Carnegie China noted that "the volatility of US policy, including the use of force and the resulting economic harm, has put many on edge." He cautioned that China's image-burnishing efforts don't erase its status as authoritarian.
