Ahead of Trump-Xi meeting, China says bombers flew near Taiwan
China's drills with nuclear-capable bombers and fighters demonstrate military strength to assert sovereignty over Taiwan ahead of the Trump-Xi summit, officials said.
- On Oct 27, Taiwan's Defence Ministry reported four Chinese military aircraft — three fighter jets and one support aircraft — in the previous 24 hours, while state media publicised bomber flights just a few days before the Xi Jinping–Trump meeting.
- Chinese state media said a group of H-6K bombers recently flew near Taiwan to practise confrontation drills, while the Eastern Theatre Command tested air blockades and precision strikes, the military channel said.
- Several J-10 fighters flew in combat formation to a designated target airspace, and the H-6K strategic bomber, which can carry nuclear weapons, participated in drills, the Eastern Theatre Command said recently.
- Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said peace must rely on strength and increased defence spending, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Oct 26 said Taiwan should not worry about the talks.
- Chinese state television showed bombing footage and an officer said the `coast of Taiwan can be clearly made out`, while Taiwan's Defence Ministry reported no unusual activity recently despite routine patrols by combat aircraft and warships.
