Chief of troubled Indonesian nutrition agency replaced for second time in 2 months
The replacement follows budget cuts and a corruption probe into the free meals program, which has already reached 62.5 million recipients, officials said.
- On Wednesday, Head of the National Nutrition Agency Nanik Sudaryati Deyang resigned after serving 45 days. She cited health reasons, stating she requires heart treatment abroad, leaving the program's future uncertain.
- Nanik took office in early June following the dismissal of predecessor Dadan Hindayana. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto removed Hindayana, who was arrested shortly after, due to his involvement in a corruption case.
- Targeting nearly 90 million children and pregnant women, the program faces criticism regarding high costs and food poisoning. During Deyang's 45-day tenure, the government reduced the annual budget from $15 billion to around $12 billion.
- Writing on Facebook, Deyang noted President Prabowo Subianto was "concerned and sympathetic" regarding her health. He accepted her resignation but requested that she continue to help oversee the agency during the transition.
- The National Nutrition Agency maintains that its current priority is "effective and targeted" distribution management. The agency continues to evaluate program recipients, aiming to improve meal delivery despite leadership instability.
