Deputy Saved Nurse’s Life Before Being Shot in Indiana ER: Court Documents
Court records say the deputy was shot three times after helping a stranded motorist, and he is now paralyzed from the chest down.
On Friday, LaPorte County Sheriff's Deputy Jon Samuelson was shot three times in Franciscan Health Michigan City's emergency room after confronting suspect Sharod L. Grafton, 22, of Chicago, who pulled a handgun during their struggle.
Samuelson was unaware Grafton was wanted when he picked him up at 6:34 a.m. near State Road 2 and 900 West, believing him a stranded motorist; a critical BOLO message from Chicago Police Department did not reach local officers until after Samuelson was already transporting him.
One bullet entered Samuelson's front left shoulder and exited his rear left shoulder; a second grazed his right calf; a third entered behind his left ear, exited his neck, re-entered and lodged in his T1 vertebrae, causing permanent paralysis from the chest down.
Samuelson was airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital where he underwent eight hours of surgery and remained in critical but stable condition as of Tuesday, while Grafton faces attempted murder, battery against a public safety official and auto theft charges in Porter County Jail.
The spinal injury has left Samuelson permanently paralyzed from the chest down; court records show he never discharged his firearm during the confrontation, while a Glock pistol was recovered near Grafton's arrest location in a wooded area west of the hospital.
