Chennai-bound IndiGo flight makes emergency landing after passenger’s power bank catches fire mid-air
The cabin crew and passengers extinguished the blaze, and IndiGo arranged a replacement aircraft after the emergency diversion.
On Sunday, October 11, 2026, IndiGo flight 6E-6115 from Delhi to Chennai diverted to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad after a passenger's power bank caught fire in an overhead bin. The aircraft landed safely with no reported injuries.
Cabin crew extinguished the blaze using onboard fire extinguishers while passengers attempted to contain the flames with bags and cloth. IndiGo confirmed the fire originated from a customer's "personal electronic device" stored in the overhead compartment.
IndiGo arranged a replacement aircraft to transport passengers to Chennai and apologized for the disruption by offering refreshments and timely updates. Pilots followed established safety protocols, confirming the diversion and safe landing met aviation standards.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, while the Directorate General of Civil Aviation previously issued an advisory asking airlines to prohibit passengers from using power banks to charge devices on board.
Lithium-Ion batteries can undergo "thermal runaway," a process causing uncontrollable heating and flames if damaged, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. IndiGo's dangerous items policy mandates power banks remain in cabin reach, not in overhead compartments or checked luggage.
