- On Monday in Utica, corrections officer Christopher Walrath was sentenced to 15 years after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the death of Robert Brooks.
- At Marcy Correctional Facility infirmary, Brooks suffered fatal injuries after being transferred from Mohawk Correctional Facility, where he was beaten, authorities say.
- According to the autopsy report, Brooks’ death was caused by 'compression of the neck and multiple blunt-impact injuries', with body cameras capturing the assault by four prison guards.
- In response to the beating, a federal lawsuit was filed, and Governor Kathy Hochul ordered the prison guards involved in the beating to be fired.
- Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick is prosecuting more defendants, with three workers indicted for manslaughter and trials scheduled for October.
