Cannes Festival promises escapism in Hollywood-lite edition
Thierry Fremaux said many of the 21 contenders favor escapism as major Hollywood studios play a smaller role this year.
- On Thursday, The Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux unveiled 21 films in competition for the Palme d'Or, featuring fewer major Hollywood studios and dialing down the "American razzle-dazzle of previous editions."
- Around 2,500 films were submitted for selection, underlining industry vitality despite the studio absence; Fremaux noted it is "complicated to separate American cinema, with the studio on one side and independent cinema on the other."
- Frontrunners for the top prize include Japan's Hirokazu Kore-eda with "Sheep in the Box" and Romania's Cristian Mungiu with "Fjord," while Spain's Pedro Almodovar and Iran's Asghar Farhadi compete with "Amarga Navidad" and "Histoires Paralleles."
- Hollywood and Broadway legend Barbra Streisand will receive the festival's Honorary Palme d'Or, as will New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson; John Travolta presents his directorial debut "Propeller One-Way Night Coach."
- Set for May 12 to 23, the festival selection balances Western escapism focused on "gentleness, songs, nature" with films "bringing history into the present," including historical dramas and documentaries.
