Canada bans pistachio imports from Iran amid salmonella outbreak

Canada's ban on Iranian pistachio imports follows over 100 salmonella infections and multiple food recalls, with enforcement actions possible for non-compliance, officials said.

  • On Saturday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency temporarily banned pistachio imports from Iran, effective immediately and until further notice.
  • The Public Health Agency of Canada is leading an outbreak investigation with more than 100 laboratory-confirmed Salmonella infections linked to pistachio kernels and products originating from Iran.
  • As a licence condition, companies will be required to show proof their pistachio products do not originate from Iran or face Salmonella testing and inspections by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
  • Importers could face enforcement actions including administrative monetary penalties, licence suspension or cancellation, and prosecution under federal food-safety rules, the CFIA said.
  • The CFIA says the restrictions will remain while it analyzes information from the food-safety investigation, ongoing surveillance and inspections of importers.
