- On August 27, 2025, the Union Cabinet approved an extension and revamp of the government’s loan program supporting street vendors, prolonging its duration until March 31, 2030 to continue providing financial assistance across India.
- The scheme, launched on June 1, 2020, was initially designed to aid street vendors during the COVID-19 pandemic and has since been expanded beyond statutory towns to include peri-urban and census towns.
- The restructuring raised the loan limits for the first and second installments to Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively, introduced UPI-enabled RuPay credit cards for those repaying the second loan on time, and offered digital cashback rewards of up to Rs 1,600 to encourage electronic transactions.
- By July 30, more than 96 lakh loans totaling Rs 13,797 crore had been provided to upwards of 68 lakh vendors. Approximately 47 lakh beneficiaries engaged digitally have carried out 557 crore transactions with a combined value of Rs 6.09 lakh crore.
- The extension aims to empower 1.15 crore beneficiaries by fostering inclusive economic growth, promoting financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and sustainable urban ecosystems as stated by the government at the cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister.

The move is expected to benefit 1.15 crore street vendors, including 50 lakh new beneficiaries. The scheme will continue to be implemented jointly by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and the Department of Financial Services (DFS).
