US Budget Deficit 2026: US Fiscal 2026 Budget Deficit Rises to $1.99 Trillion, Largest in 5 Years
Revenue rose 3% to more than $5.4 trillion, but spending climbed 6% to $7.4 trillion as interest and entitlement costs increased.
On Friday, the Treasury Department reported the 2026 fiscal year budget deficit rose by $217 billion to $1.99 trillion, marking the third-largest shortfall in U.S. history.
Federal outlays reached a record $7.4 trillion, driven by record spending to service more than $40 trillion in national debt as interest payments climbed to $1.36 trillion.
Despite record revenue of $5.4 trillion, tariff income declined 11% to about $173 billion following a Supreme Court ruling that triggered $145 billion in refunds.
The deficit marks the largest shortfall in five years, with interest payments now eclipsed only by Social Security and combined Medicare and Medicaid spending among federal outlays.
Analysts warn these enormous deficits are the "new normal" absent legislative action, as the U.S. faces mounting pressure with interest costs consuming larger shares of national resources.
