Record numbers may need to use a food bank by 2029
Trussell analysis projects that more than 9.1 million people in the UK could face severe hardship and risk needing a food bank by March 2029, reaching record levels according to available data.
Data from Trussell shows 8.2 million people faced severe hardship in 2022/23, while Carnegie research indicates collective wellbeing declined as cost-of-living pressures persisted across the UK.
Nearly 23 per cent of working parents used food support services in 2024/25, according to The Felix Project; the 2029 forecast includes 6.2 million adults and 2.9 million children facing potential hardship.
Helen Barnard, director of policy and research at Trussell, urged the Prime Minister to "renew Labour's manifesto promise to end the need for emergency food" in next week's Budget.
Sarah Davidson, chief executive of Carnegie, said current approaches are "not yet making systematic improvements to collective wellbeing," calling for decision-makers to prioritize evidence of whether people's lives are improving.
