Briton jailed in Iran given additional two-year sentence, family says
The family says the new term was imposed for speaking to media, as Craig and Lindsay Foreman remain in Evin prison on espionage convictions they deny.
- On Wednesday, the family of British couple Craig Foreman and Lindsay Foreman said a judge extended Craig's sentence by two years for speaking to the media while imprisoned in Iran.
- Arrested last year while traveling through Iran on a motorcycle journey from Europe to Australia, the couple has been held in Tehran's Evin prison since February and began a hunger strike in May.
- Family spokesperson Joe Bennett said Craig was told he was being taken to see his lawyer but was instead brought before a judge and informed of the additional sentence, denied a lawyer or translator and given no opportunity to defend himself.
- The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated it is "urgently following up with the Iranian authorities" regarding the extension, while the family welcomed Monday's appointment of Alistair Burt as the nation's first envoy for complex consular cases.
- Last month, independent experts said the Foremans appeared "wrongfully detained" and sentenced after proceedings failing to meet fair trial guarantees, while the government stressed the couple's health and welfare as its "priority" and warned against all travel to Iran.
