US VP Vance says Britain has been failed by leaders, hopes next PM delivers change
Vance said Britain has been failed by its leadership and urged the next prime minister to deliver structural change.
US Vice President JD Vance stated in an interview published Sunday that British politics is "very broken" and requires "significant structural change," remarks made as America celebrated its 250th anniversary of independence on July 4.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation last month after two years in office, paving the way for Britain's seventh prime minister in a decade. Lawmaker Andy Burnham emerged as the sole candidate to replace him.
Although Vance admitted he does not know Burnham well, he emphasized the UK remains "one of our closest and most important allies." He described the country as an "amazing place" with the "most amazing people in the world."
Downing Street responded to the comments, stating, "Our politics should bring people together even in the most terrible of circumstances." The nations maintain a "special relationship" despite disagreements over Ukraine and Gaza.
President Donald Trump described Burnham as "extremely liberal," suggesting the incoming leader may oppose North Sea oil development. Vance maintained the US will work with whoever becomes prime minister "as successfully as we can.
