The EU reached a preliminary agreement with China on Thursday to ease restrictions on the export of critical rare earth metals that have sparked alarm across the bloc and threatened to paralyze industries.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Thursday during a visit to Beijing that "balancing our relationship with China is not just an option, but essential." During a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, she emphasized the importance of access for EU companies to the Chinese market, exports of rare earths, and China's influence on Russia.
The EU hopes to avoid bottlenecks in rare earths with a new mechanism. The agreement was reached at the EU-China summit in Beijing. However, the EU remained vague about details.
China has recently stepped up controls on exports of rare earths due to the customs war with the US. If there are bottlenecks in the EU, it will take a long time for new raw materials to be delivered. This is now to change with a new mechanism.
