Brain-eating amoeba death traced to splash pad at country club, Arkansas officials say

  • A child likely died from a brain-eating amoeba after swimming in the Elkhorn River, where the organism may have been contracted. The illness progressed rapidly, leading to the child's death just days later.
  • Health officials believe that warm water temperatures and drought conditions in the river contributed to the incident. The amoeba, naegleria fowleri, enters the body through the nose and travels to the brain, causing destruction of brain tissue. It is commonly found in warm freshwater.
  • The infection does not spread from person to person, but other individuals swimming in the area might have come into contact with the amoeba. Symptoms of the infection include headache, fever, nausea or vomiting, and can progress to more severe symptoms such as stiff neck, confusion, and seizures. Unfortunately, in most cases, death occurs within five days of symptoms.
