Shark Attacks Boy Swimming in Sydney Harbor, Leaving Him in Critical Condition

  • On Sunday about 4.20pm, a 13-year-old boy was bitten multiple times by a shark at Nielsen Park’s Shark Beach in Vaucluse and is fighting for his life.
  • Jumping off rocks at Nielsen Park's rock ledge, the boy was with up to five other children who reportedly tried to assist before emergency services arrived.
  • A Water Police officer attached two medical tourniquets and first aid was given aboard the police vessel Water Police 41 before transfer to Rose Bay wharf, where NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him for over an hour.
  • He was then taken by road to Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, the beach at Nielsen Park was closed, and swimmers are advised to avoid the water while police cordon the rock ledge and search for the shark.
  • Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty said the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is working to identify the species, with injuries consistent with what is believed to have been a large shark at Nielsen Park, a popular family swimming spot in Sydney Harbour.
