Boston Bruins to Retire Zdeno Chara's No. 33
Zdeno Chara, the Bruins' longest-serving captain, will have his No. 33 jersey retired, becoming the first European player honored this way by the team, which has retired 13 numbers total.
- The Boston Bruins announced Monday morning that No. 33 will be raised to the TD Garden rafters in a pregame ceremony on Jan. 15, 2026, before facing the Seattle Kraken.
- Chara, who captained Boston for 14 seasons, helped lead the Bruins to the 2011 Stanley Cup and guided them to the postseason 11 times.
- Stat lines show he appeared in 1,023 games for Boston, compiling 148 goals and 333 assists for 481 points, and played 1,680 career games—the NHL record for a defenseman.
- The move makes Chara the 13th number retired by the Boston Bruins, with Jeremy M. Jacobs stating `The Rafters are a fitting home for 33, because there will never be another Zdeno Chara`.
- Now an advisor, Chara recently rejoined the Bruins as a hockey operations advisor and mentor and will address the media at TD Garden on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
