The suspension, which took effect on Wednesday night, has halted operations at the canteen in the BMC Annexe building, which serves hundreds of civic officials, employees, police personnel, corporators and visitors daily.

The Maharashtra FDA ordered the closure of the BMC headquarters canteen after a fly was reportedly found in a glass of milk and inspectors noted hygiene lapses. The canteen will stay shut until deficiencies are corrected, while the operator also faces a penalty of about Rs 50,000.

Following the inspection, the FDA issued a stop-business notice to the canteen operator over hygiene lapses and food safety rule violations.
