Bills Formally Opening New Highmark Stadium
The $2.1 billion project replaces the Bills’ 1973-era home after a 30-year lease secured the team’s future in Western New York, officials said.
- On Tuesday, the Buffalo Bills officially opened the $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, marking the franchise's move across the street for the 2026 season.
- Construction of the facility took three years, with team owner Kim Pegula helping shape a design inspired by the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, replacing the team's former home that opened in 1973.
- To combat wind, designers implemented a 360-degree canopy covering about 60% of the seating bowl; according to Jonathan Mallie, global director of Populous' Americas practice, testing showed winds on the playing surface were 50% lower than outside the stadium.
- The new venue features a reduced capacity of 60,108, down from 73,000, while New York State and Erie County taxpayers contributed $850 million toward the project Gov. Kathy Hochul called the largest construction effort in Western New York history.
- Fans will see the stadium's first action on August 8 during the 'Return of the Blue and Red' scrimmage, followed by the official home opener against the Detroit Lions on September 17.
