'Big beautiful bill' invests $25B in Coast Guard ahead of 235-year anniversary
UNITED STATES, JUL 14 – The $25 billion funding supports fleet modernization, new vessels, aircraft, and infrastructure to enhance maritime security and drug interdiction, officials said.
- Last week, President Trump signed a nearly $25 billion funding bill approved by Congress aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the U.S. Coast Guard ahead of its 235th anniversary.
- This investment follows a history starting with the 1790 Tariff Act, which authorized 10 vessels to enforce trade laws, reflecting ongoing modernization needs.
- The funding will support the procurement of 17 icebreakers, 21 cutters, over 40 helicopters, six HC-130J aircraft, and modernization of infrastructure and surveillance systems.
- Adm. Kevin Lunday, the Coast Guard’s Acting Commandant, described this as a landmark investment that signals a new chapter and demonstrates strong public backing to renew and equip the Service for future challenges.
