Belfast stabbing victim may lose sight in remaining eye, family say
Stephen Ogilvie has woken from an induced coma, and his family says he may lose sight in his remaining eye after the attack.
On Wednesday, Stephen Ogilvie, 44, woke from an induced coma after being stabbed on Kinnaird Avenue last week, having lost his left eye and facing potential sight loss in his right.
Hadi Alodid, 30-year-old Sudanese national, faces attempted murder charges following the June 8 attack, which triggered consecutive nights of violent, anti-immigration disorder across Belfast.
A GoFundMe campaign has raised over £31,000 for Stephen, including a £10,000 donation from Maitui Mag Tighearnan, the 'Hero of Belfast,' who intervened with a hurling bat during the attack.
Ogilvie's family urged the public to avoid letting the attack "divide people or fuel hostility," while Alodid remains in custody awaiting a July 8 court appearance via videolink.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland reported 35 arrests and 23 charges following the disorder, with Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson stating officers "undoubtedly saved lives" amid challenging conditions.
