The controversy over the Trump administration’s deportation of Venezuelan immigrants to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador dominates this week’s editorial cartoon gallery. The government invoked the wartime Alien Enemies Act, claiming the men are gang members and criminals but producing little evidence of crimes beyond illegal entry to the United States. The migrants were not afforded due process.

It is the prison of all superlatives, both for the Salvadoran authorities - the largest prison in the Americas - and for human rights defenders who criticize its concentrationary aspect. The Cecot has been regularly in the spotlight since its inauguration in early 2023 and again recently in the wake of the expulsions of Latin American migrants from the United States to the small country of Central America.
