B.C. police watchdog called in after fatal shooting in Sechelt

  • On Saturday, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. said it is investigating after a man was shot and killed by Royal Canadian Mounted Police at a Sechelt residence.
  • Officers received a call around 3:30 a.m. Saturday about a man in crisis carrying an edged weapon in the Porpoise Bay area near Sechelt, with children and other occupants inside the home.
  • Police entered the Oldmill Lane residence before 4:30 a.m., safely removed three occupants, and shots were fired by police at about 10:30 a.m. during an interaction inside.
  • BC Emergency Health Services attended, and the IIO BC says the man who was shot sustained gunshot-related injuries, was taken to a local hospital, and was pronounced deceased.
  • IIO BC is routinely called in after fatal or serious police incidents; no other injuries were reported and other occupants of the home who were not injured, the IIO says.
