Ousted Bangladesh PM Hasina vows to return home this year
She said the verdict was politically motivated and vowed to return despite a death sentence and the banning of her Awami League party.
On Sunday, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina vowed to return to her country "this year" during an interview, despite being sentenced to death in absentia for crimes against humanity.
The 78-year-old fled to India in August 2024 after a student-led uprising ended her 15-year rule; her former ruling Awami League has since been outlawed.
A Dhaka court sentenced Hasina to death last November for incitement and atrocities, but she told Indian broadcaster NDTV the verdict was "part of an illegal, unconstitutional and politically motivated process."
Since Prime Minister Tarique Rahman won in February, ties between India and Bangladesh have improved, though Bangladesh repeatedly demands Hasina's extradition.
Aside from a January speech in New Delhi, Hasina has remained largely out of public view while asserting she was elected five times by the people.
