Bangkok roads submerged as flood disaster declared

Authorities mobilized pumps, shelters and sandbags after nearly 300 mm of rain flooded roads and canals and disrupted travel across the capital.

  • On Sept 26, Bangkok authorities declared a disaster across all 50 districts after continuous rain caused heavy flooding. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt ordered officials to accelerate assistance for affected residents, including vulnerable groups.
  • Almost 300 millimetres of rain fell over 24 hours, swelling Bangkok's canals and flooding roads. Chadchart warned, "Every canal filled," noting the east of the city is most impacted.
  • Chadchart instructed district offices to implement seven emergency measures, including prioritizing bedridden patients and vulnerable residents. Agencies were directed to prepare BMA-run schools as shelters and coordinate sandbag distribution.
  • The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration opened shelters for evacuees and offered free MRT "park and ride" access to help residents secure vehicles until October 2. Officials coordinated with transport authorities to manage the emergency response.
  • Residents like motorbike rider Samruay Nakkamnueng in the Ari neighbourhood expressed concern over wading through floodwater. Some compared the current situation to the 2011 flood that killed more than 500 people across Thailand.
