FBI Personnel Have Fatally Shot a Man Holding Hostages in Bakersfield, California, Police Say
Police said the standoff ended after about 12 hours and two hostages were released before the FBI opened fire on the suspect.
On Wednesday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation fatally shot a man holding hostages inside a Chase Bank building in Bakersfield, California, ending a standoff, the Bakersfield Police Department said.
The incident began Tuesday afternoon when authorities responded to a bomb threat at the Chase Bank building, prompting police to establish a perimeter and initiate negotiations with the suspect.
Bakersfield Police said the suspect barricaded himself with community members inside; two hostages were released Tuesday evening following negotiations, while livestreamer Jacob Davidson captured footage from a nearby garage.
Authorities evacuated nearby buildings including City Hall and temporarily closed roads to secure the area as the crisis negotiation team maintained contact with the suspect throughout the standoff.
The standoff concluded after 12 hours, and the Bakersfield Police and the FBI are continuing their investigation into the officer-involved shooting that ended the hostage situation.
