At least 10 killed as heavy rains drench southern, central China
On Tuesday, torrential rain across southern and central China triggered widespread flooding, killing at least 10 people and closing schools, businesses, and transport services across Hubei and Hunan.
The unusually large rainfall zone spanning more than 621 miles resulted from moisture converging from the Bay of Bengal, the South China Sea, and the Pacific Ocean. The Ministry of Emergency Management called this the strongest rainfall event this year.
Heavy rain in Hubei affected 337 townships, with one village receiving 507 mm of rain from Saturday through Monday. National Meteorological Center data shows 628 stations logged torrential rain, with 40 recording extraordinarily heavy rainfall.
At least 21 people have been killed in flood-related incidents across the region, prompting authorities to relocate residents in Hubei and Hunan. Separately, Guangxi officials relocated 7,000 people and established temporary shelters following a magnitude 5.2 earthquake on Monday.
From Wednesday, the heaviest rainfall is expected along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The National Meteorological Centre warns large areas will continue receiving heavy rain through May 20, with potential thunderstorms and strong convective winds.
