Aspinall diagnosed with rare eye condition after Gane poke

Tom Aspinall suffers persistent double vision and visual field loss from traumatic bilateral Brown's syndrome after an accidental eye poke during UFC 321, with ongoing medical monitoring.

  • On Dec 1, Tom Aspinall, the UFC heavyweight champion, said he has been diagnosed with Brown's syndrome in both eyes and is not cleared to fight after an accidental eye poke at UFC 1 in October.
  • Clinicians say the injury stems from a bilateral eye-poke that disrupted the superior oblique tendon-trochlear complex, diagnosing bilateral traumatic Brown's syndrome with no acute abnormalities on CT/MRI imaging.
  • Examinations found persistent diplopia and reduced eye motility, including marked restriction of elevation in adduction, while Humphrey visual field testing showed severe bilateral visual field depression and photophobia.
  • The episode prompted renewed calls for stricter enforcement after Aspinall's defence was ruled a No Contest and he was taken to hospital, despite UFC trialling new gloves last year.
  • Aspinall said on his YouTube channel on Sunday that targeted periocular steroid injections or surgical intervention may be required if motility impairment persists, and he will return only when fully fit.
