Asiatic lion population up from 523 in 2015 to 891 in 2025: Bhupender Yadav

The ministry credited Project Lion and community-led conservation as the species’ range expanded from 30,000 sq km to nearly 35,000 sq km.

  • Marking World Lion Day on Monday, Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav announced the Asiatic lion population rose from 523 in 2015 to 891 in 2025, a 32 per cent increase over 2020 figures.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Project Lion on August 15, 2020, to ensure long-term conservation after only around 40-60 lions remained in and around Gir in the early 1900s due to overhunting and habitat loss.
  • Conservation efforts in Gujarat expanded the lion range to nearly 35,000 sq km across 11 districts, while securing more than 55,000 open wells to prevent deaths and restoring wild prey to about 74 per cent of the diet.
  • After disappearing from the area in the 19th century, lions naturally returned to Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in 2023, with the population growing to 17 by 2025, marking a significant recovery milestone.
  • India's conservation strategy emphasizes scientific tracking, disease monitoring, and community involvement to ensure long-term survival. "As we mark World Lion Day, let us reaffirm our resolve to safeguard our natural heritage," Yadav said.
