32 Orphaned Raccoons Prepare for the Wild at B.C. Rehab Centre
Wild ARC staff bottle-feed, vaccinate and train the raccoons for release after most arrived orphaned from vehicle strikes or dog attacks.
- The SPCA Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre in Metchosin is currently caring for 32 young raccoons being bottle-fed, placed in incubators, and given stuffed animals in preparation for release to the wild.
- Most arrived alone or with siblings after their parents were killed by human-related incidents like vehicle strikes; some also suffered treatable eye issues or minor injuries following dog attacks.
- Due to zoonotic disease risks, staff wear specialized protective equipment and all 32 are vaccinated against feline and canine parvovirus; the youngest babies receive the most intensive care, with staff feeding them specialized formula up to five times a day.
- Raccoons are highly social animals that thrive when living alongside each other, said Ashley Currie, manager, BC SPCA Wild ARC; the centre pairs single raccoons with others of similar age and provides stuffed animals and heating pads for social development.
- As the raccoons mature, their diet shifts to high-protein raw meat, fish, eggs, fruit and vegetables hidden in puzzle boxes to encourage natural foraging, while outdoor enclosures with climbing branches, dens and shallow wading pools simulate natural environments. The team expects to release them in the fall once they reach optimal weight and demonstrate skilled foraging behaviour, with supporters able to help through Wild ARC's Buy Me Dinner program.
