It is estimated that nearly 200 wooden coffins still lie beneath the floor of the medieval stone church of St. Mary in Turku. Such lack of research in a historic area is astonishing to archaeologists.

Some of the deceased are allowed to rest in the grave under the church. Most of the coffins found now are those of children. The oldest of the graves may date back to the 15th century.
