- On Wednesday, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change directed states across the Aravalli range to impose a complete ban on granting new mining leases to curb illegal mining and protect the range as a continuous geological formation.
- On November 20, the Supreme Court of India accepted a new definition of the Aravalli Hills proposed by a committee under the Environment Secretary, setting the elevation threshold at 100 metre or more above local relief.
- ICFRE has been tasked to map and recommend further no-mining zones across the Aravallis using ecological, geological and landscape-level assessment factors and to prepare a Management Plan for Sustainable Mining for stakeholder consultation.
- The directive will expand protected zones and reshape mining oversight, enlarging areas prohibited from mining while State Governments ensure compliance to prevent desertification, conserve biodiversity, and recharge aquifers.
- The Aravalli range spans 670 kilometres in northwestern India and dates back around 2 billion years, with its highest elevation recorded at 1,722 metres and stretching from Delhi to Gujarat.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has mandated a complete ban on new mining leases across the Aravalli range from Delhi to Gujarat to combat illegal mining and protect this vital ecological zone.
The central government has imposed a moratorium on new mining leases to fully protect the Aravalli Range. No new mines will be opened in the entire Aravalli region (from Delhi to Gujarat). ICFRE will develop a plan to expand the protected area and implement a sustainable mining plan. Strict regulations will apply to existing mines.
