Aptos Launches Encrypted Mempool: How Does It Work?

Users can opt in to keep pending transactions hidden until ordering is finalized, limiting frontrunning and sandwich attacks.

  • On Monday, Layer-1 blockchain Aptos launched its Encrypted Mempool on mainnet, allowing users to hide pending transaction details to prevent maximal extractable value attacks including frontrunning and sandwich attacks.
  • Trading bots often monitor pending blockchain transactions to identify profitable opportunities before execution, exploiting users through frontrunning and sandwich attacks. Aptos designed this feature to keep transaction details hidden until block ordering is finalized.
  • Transactions encrypted on the user's device are decrypted by validators only after block ordering is finalized. This mechanism adds approximately 20 milliseconds of latency per block and requires a minimum gas price of 200 octas per gas unit.
  • Petra wallet is the first to offer this encryption directly within its transaction signing process, while Aptos-based Decibel exchange plans to use it for private pending orders. Both target institutional and individual traders.
  • Blockchain analytics company Bitquery identified approximately 6.9 million sandwich attacks on Solana between October 30, 2025, and October 7, 2026, highlighting the scale of MEV extraction. Following the launch, APT token fell 11.5% over 24 hours.
